Some information on Bass:
The two main types of Bass are the largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), also known as a brown bass, widemouth bass, bigmouth bass, black bass, or Florida bass, and the smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu), also known as a smallmouth, brown bass, brownie and bareback bass.
The largemouth bass is olive green in appearance. The skin is marked with a series of dark, often black, blotches that form a jagged horizontal line along each side of the fish (flank). The upper jaw of the largemouth bass extends beyond the rear margin of the orbit (the cavity or socket of the skull in which the eye and its appendages are situated). A good place to fish for largemouth bass is under overhead cover, such as overhanging banks, brush, weed beds, ridges, drop-offs and jetties. Largemouth bass makes use of its hearing, vibration, sight, and smell to attack and capture its prey and such baits should be taken into consideration when bass fishing.
The Pro-Bass Fishing Training Manual is the Insiders Guide To Bass Fishing Tips & Techniques Known to a Select Group of Highly Effective Bass Fisherman.
Smallmouth bass are normally brownish (some times yellowish) with red eyes and dark brown vertical stripes, rather than a horizontal stripe along the flanks. You will find 13-15 soft rays in the dorsal fin. Smallmouth bass's upper jaw extends right to the middle of both eyes.
When fishing smallmouth bass they can mainly be found in clear water, especially in streams and rivers where there are rocky areas and stumps and also sandy bottoms. The smallmouth lives in colder water temperatures compared to the largemouth bass that prefer warmer temperatures. Because smallmouth bass are intolerant of pollution, the smallmouth bass is a good natural indicator of a healthy environment.
